Compact modular drives for chain conveyor systems

Chain conveyors are widely used in intralogistics and industrial transport lines to move goods and bulk material under frequent load cycles and in harsh ambient conditions. Their drive trains must combine compact installation, reliable torque transfer, and straightforward maintenance. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has expanded its positioning for these applications with a modular portfolio of gear units, electric motors, and variable frequency drives (VFDs) aimed at reducing the number of drive variants while supporting fast commissioning and service replacement.

Why modular drive architectures matter in conveyor design
Conveyor projects often involve repeated configurations across many lines and sites, where each unique drive variant increases engineering effort, spare parts inventory, and maintenance complexity. NORD’s approach is built around a modular system intended to standardize drive selection across different conveyor layouts, with “drop-in” replacement as a service requirement for high-uptime operations.

The design also reflects physical constraints common in conveyor installations: limited space, fixed shaft alignments, and dense mechanical routing.

Compact gear units designed for tight installation spaces
For installations where envelope size and mechanical flexibility are critical, NORD uses its compact UNICASE™ gear unit platform. The gear units support multiple shaft arrangements to match conveyor geometry and mounting constraints.

For chain and drag conveyor systems, the commonly referenced configuration is a right-angle gear unit with a hollow shaft design, which supports direct mounting and simplified mechanical integration. Depending on the site environment, variants can be specified with free input shafts or direct-mounted motors, plus additional protections for dust, high temperatures, and moisture.

Food packaging conveyor drives with decentralized VFD control
In food packaging chain conveyors, NORD highlights a configuration based on NORDBLOC.1® helical bevel gear units, paired with IE3 asynchronous motors and motor-mounted NORDAC ON VFDs.

For decentralized conveyor control, the NORDAC ON VFDs cover a 0.50–5 hp power range and are designed for plug-in wiring and plug-and-play commissioning. For line-level control integration, the drives include an internal PLC for drive-related functions and a multi-protocol Ethernet interface supporting PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and EtherCAT, selectable via parameter settings.

For safety-related stop conditions in conveyor zones, functional safety options include STO (Safe Torque Off) and SS1 (Safe Stop 1), intended to prevent unintended motion and support operator and equipment protection.

NORD also specifies suitability for cold environments down to -22°F (-30°C), with optional lubricants for low- and high-temperature operation.

Cabinet VFD option for stand-alone applications
Where decentralized inverter mounting is not suitable, NORD references the cabinet-based NORDAC PRO SK 500P VFD series. The “book-size” VFD format is intended for compact control cabinets and broad drive coverage. The range spans 0.33–50 hp, with high overload capability positioned for demanding conveyor duty cycles.

The centralized drive option can also be configured with STO and SS1, and supports add-on modules that extend functionality based on application requirements.

Drag chain conveyors for grain and bulk material transfer
For drag chain conveyors handling grain and other bulk materials, drive trains must tolerate abrasive dust, continuous-duty operation, and complex routing with multiple transfer points. NORD positions its drive portfolio for drag conveyor applications requiring multiple load and discharge points, such as bulk storage bin fill and extraction.

For these environments, the referenced gearbox options include:
Configuration options include hollow and solid shaft variants, including GRIPMAXX, as well as environment-hardening features such as special seals. For process integrity and reverse-flow prevention, conveyor systems can be equipped with backstops to prevent material from running in the wrong direction. For regulated environments, motor options include CSA-approved hazardous location motors.

Positioning across intralogistics conveyor use cases
NORD’s conveyor drive offering is positioned across both discrete goods transport and bulk handling, with emphasis on reducing drive variant complexity while maintaining flexibility in shaft layout, inverter topology (decentralized or cabinet-based), network integration, and safety functions. For intralogistics operators, these parameters directly influence commissioning time, spare parts strategy, and maintenance response time in conveyor-dependent facilities.
