KUKA AG is expanding its intralogistics portfolio with a new series of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). The KMF 1500P-CB counterbalance forklift automates the horizontal transport of a wide variety of load carriers over longer distances in production and warehouse environments.
Challenges in Internal Logistics
Industrial companies face the task of reliably maintaining material flows amidst an increasing shortage of personnel and skilled workers. To increase efficiency in intralogistics, autonomous transport systems are required that can be integrated into existing transfer stations without complex infrastructure adjustments. KUKA addresses this market need with the KMF 1500P series. Christian Mühsam, Product Manager at KUKA, explains: "With the new forklift family, we help them automate transport processes and increase safety. At the same time, we are expanding our portfolio with solutions that go beyond classic horizontal material transport."
Counterbalance Design and Flexible Load Handling
The KMF 1500P-CB handles transport tasks with payloads of up to 1,500 kilograms. Thanks to its kinematic design as a counterbalance forklift, loads can also be picked up at closed transfer points, such as roller conveyors. The system accurately recognizes and positions a wide variety of pallet and container types up to a maximum lifting height of three meters. To ensure stable operation over longer distances within factory halls, the chassis is equipped with enlarged wheels. The electrical power supply is based on LFP batteries charged via conductive charging technology, ensuring automated 24/7 operation.
Safety Concept and Software Integration according to VDA 5050
Autonomous transport in dynamic production environments requires comprehensive sensor technology to minimize risks. The KMF 1500P-CB features a 360° safety concept for environment detection. At its market launch, the system already meets the regulatory requirements of the new European Machinery Regulation, which will become mandatory in January 2027. At the software level, the forklift is based on the established KUKA.AMR ecosystem, enabling rapid integration into existing intralogistics processes. By implementing the standardized VDA 5050 interface, the vehicle series can also be connected interoperably to external fleet managers.
Additional Context
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement.
In the autonomous counterbalance forklift (Counterbalance AMR) segment, the KUKA KMF 1500P-CB positions itself against systems like the AGILOX OCF or the MiR1200 Pallet Jack. The technological advantage of the counterbalance design over conventional wheel-supported autonomous pallet jacks is its ability to handle closed load carriers and directly approach conveyor systems, as no wheel arms need to navigate beneath the load. With a payload capacity of 1,500 kilograms and a lifting height of three meters, KUKA covers the medium to heavy load segment of intralogistics. While competing products like the AGILOX OCF reach lifting heights of 1.6 meters with the same payload capacity, the KMF 1500P-CB significantly extends the vertical reach. The native integration of the VDA 5050 interface represents a critical criterion for industrial fleet operations, as plant operators increasingly coordinate heterogeneous AMR fleets from different manufacturers via a central master control system.
